International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first March 8 IWD gathering supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Prior to this the Socialist Party of America, United Kingdom's Suffragists and Suffragettes, and further groups campaigned for women equality. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organisation specific. Make IWD your day! - everyday!

Danai Gurira inspires me. She's an amazing actress and writes plays as well. She is talented and bold and seems to always choose roles that represent strong women of color who don't conform to gender normative roles. I love that she's always playing warriors and supporting other women actors of color with her work.
Condoleezza Rice - Not only is she a Professor at Stanford University, a former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, but also an advocate of civil rights and liberties. She was the first women and the first african american to become the provost of Standard University in 1993. She was the first women to be a National Security Adviser to the president. She also was the first aftrican american woman to hold the position of Secretary of State. She also is on the 13 member board for the College Football Playoff selection committee and is now the chair of the NCAA's commission on College Basketball. Even though we see differently on the political spectrium, she is an inspiration to me and to all woman.
I find Oprah to be one of the most inspiring female role models. She has risen through any challenge life has thrown her way and continues to push ahead no matter what the odds. She is a symbol to all women that no matter what you have lived through that you can achieve great success in life. I am also inspired that she has not let life harden her. She tells people how it is with wisdom and truth but also empathy and compassion. There are so many examples of not only how she has helped others who are down and out but people who she has inspired to turn their life around just by being who she is.
I'm continually inspired by Chelsea Handler. She's never been afraid to stand up for what she believes in and is constantly trying to better herself by being more educated and involved in important issues that women face. She's brash and unapologetic and I really admire that.
Hands down, one of my favorite women in this era is Des Scroggin (@desb_ on instagram.) She is strong physically, strong in her faith and radiates confidence. Desb inspires me to #pressforprogress each and every day whether it be mentally or in the gym. She is SO motivating and uplifting. Truly an inspiration.
My inspiration for this post is Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski. She is our first openly gay mayor in Salt Lake, and the second female mayor. Upon election, she was not afraid to make big impactful moves by letting go of most City department heads in order to make a greater change in Utah. She made local air quality and climate change issues her central platform as well as focusing on finding long-term treatment solutions to SLC's growing homeless population.
The fact that she has stood up and made big moves with no fear while being the first gay mayor in the state of Utah, is something that we need as a state. I personally have seen her at local shows and supporting the LGBTQ community and am proud to have her as our mayor.
I'd like to take this IWD to give love to a woman who truly inspires me every day, My Mom. Cheryl has never strolled down the red carpet but she has inspired countless women in her field. My incredible mom went to work every day, in a field dominated by men, with her head held high and her mind on her mission. She pushed herself constantly and perserved even when times were tough and she had to face up to adversity. Cheryl also took the time to mentor others. To take younger women in their first big jobs under her wing and show them how to stay strong and let their skills shine. I'm so lucky to be her son. To have a mom that not only inspired me, taught me, and loved me more than anyone else, but that still continues to provide an amzing example for others. A very Happy Women's Day to the best mom a guy could ask for!
I am truly inspired by Serena Williams, she is a phenomenal professional tennis player, sister, wife and new mother. Serena has paved the way for women around the world with her fierce accomplishments on and off the court. She has pushed through the many challenges of being an African American tennis player and being a woman holding the #1 title for singles. Serena has taken all the negative comments in regards to race and gender head on and beat the down talkers with her perseverance and success.
Serena began her career playing alongside the court with her twin Venus at a very young age motivated by their father who pushed them as much as possible to their success. Together Serena and Venus are known not only for killing their opponents on the court but also for their sense of fashion and their enormous physique. Both in which has helped reveal to young girls that no matter how you look you should feel confident in the skin you’re in. I am so inspired to watch and listen to interviews that Serena has done because of how she speaks to her audience and encourages every young girl or woman to go out after your dream and to work hard to achieve it. She not only motivates myself and plenty of other fans by her achievements and personality but her dedication to hardwork, education and a good quality of life. Seeing her fast moves on Nike commercials and now seeing her being a mother taking on every challenge and still aiming for her goals like myself is truly astonishing.
Serena is one of the best professional tennis players in the world and continues to inspire others by her courageous, strategical leadership role. I am looking forward to her making a comeback and getting to see her daughter grow up with her motivation.
